Short answer: in the Salt Lake City area, a kitchen refresh runs about $5,000 to $15,000, a standard remodel with new cabinets, quartz, flooring and appliances in the same layout runs $15,000 to $30,000, and a full renovation with layout changes runs $30,000 to $75,000 and up. Here is what each budget realistically buys.

Around $15,000: A Smart Refresh

  • Keep the layout and the cabinet boxes if they are solid; paint or reface the doors and add new hardware
  • New quartz or granite counters, undermount sink and faucet
  • Tile backsplash
  • Luxury vinyl plank flooring
  • New lighting, such as recessed or under-cabinet lights

This budget changes how the kitchen looks and feels without the cost and downtime of new cabinets.

Around $30,000: New Cabinets, Same Layout

  • New semi-custom shaker cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers
  • Quartz counters and a full backsplash
  • New mid-range appliance package
  • New flooring, lighting, sink and faucet

For most Utah homes built before 2010, this is the sweet spot: the kitchen feels new, and keeping plumbing and gas where they are keeps the budget under control.

Around $50,000 and Up: Changing the Layout

  • Removing or opening a wall (often needing a beam, an engineer and a permit)
  • Adding or enlarging an island
  • Moving the sink, range or gas line
  • More cabinets, taller uppers and upgraded appliances

Where the Money Goes

Cabinets are usually the largest single cost, followed by labor, counters and appliances. That is why material pricing matters so much. These are the material prices we publish:

ItemBuilder priceStandard BPR price (from)Typical Utah retail
Semi-custom shaker cabinets, 10 x 10 kitchen$6,000 – $10,000$10,000$10,000 – $18,000
Quartz countertop, per sq ft (slab)$45 – $75$80$80 – $130

Estimates of material cost only, for comparison. Installation is quoted separately. Builder price is available to Model Home Program homeowners and business clients.

On a typical 10 x 10 kitchen, the difference between builder price and retail on cabinets alone can be several thousand dollars.

Updating a 1980s to 2000s Utah Kitchen

Many Salt Lake Valley kitchens still have oak cabinets, laminate or tile counters and almond or black appliances. The upgrades that make the biggest difference for the money are white or painted shaker cabinets, quartz counters, a simple tile backsplash, LVP flooring that runs into the rest of the main floor, and better lighting.

How to Save on a Kitchen Remodel

  1. Keep the layout. Moving plumbing, gas and walls is where budgets grow fastest.
  2. Choose semi-custom or stock cabinets in standard sizes instead of full custom.
  3. Use one counter material and a standard edge.
  4. Buy appliances during holiday sales. You can buy them yourself; we install them.
  5. Ask for builder price. Through the Winter Model Home Program, qualifying homeowners pay builder price with no markup on materials (contracts signed by December 31, 2026).

Timeline: a refresh takes one to two weeks. A standard remodel takes three to five weeks once cabinets arrive, and cabinets usually take four to eight weeks to arrive, so plan on two to three months from signed quote to finished kitchen.
